German comparatives – compare 2 or more things like a pro

When talking about two things, we can compare them. In German we can use comparative adjectives to describe the differences.

German Comparative Form with Adjectives

Comparative Adjectives e.g. neu/neuer

It doesn’t matter how long the German adjective is, we almost always add: –er to it.

Here are some examples of German comparatives:

klein (small) => kleiner (smaller)
Kleiner is the comparative form of the adjective klein.

schnell (fast) => schneller (faster)
neu (new) => neuer (newer)

Eine Ameise ist kleiner als eine Katze.
An ant is smaller than a cat.

Ein Hund ist schneller als eine Schildkröte.
A dog is faster than a turtle.

Mein Auto ist neuer als dein Auto.
My car is newer than your car.

Note!

Unlike in English we Germans never use the word mehr (more) to form the comparative.

Maria is more beautiful than Paula.

In German we say:
Maria ist schöner als Paula.

German Comparatives with Umlauts

There is an irregularity that affects the German comparative. Some adjectives (almost always one-syllable), add an umlaut (ä, ö or ü). Below are some examples of the common ones:

alt (old) => älter (older)

kalt (cold) => kälter (colder)
warm (warm) => wärmer (warmer)

schwach (weak) => schwächer (weaker)
stark (strong) => stärker (stronger)

klug (smart) => klüger (smarter)
dumm (dumb) => dümmer (dumber)

gesund (healthy) => gesünder (healthier)
arm (poor) => ärmer (poorer)
hart (hard) => härter (harder)

Here are some example sentences:

Dein Hund ist größer als meiner.
Your dog is bigger than mine.

Ein Elefant ist stärker als eine Maus.
An elephant is stronger than a mouse.

Der Nordpol ist kälter als die Sahara Wüste.
The North Pole is colder than the Sahara Desert.

Question and Answer Part:

  1. Read and listen a few times to the questions and answers.
  2. Answer the questions in the pauses (you may look also at the answers).
  3. After a few times don’t look at the answers anymore.
  4. Make sure that you imitate the pronunciation of my voice.
  5. Repeat the lesson until you can answer the questions easily.

Cuando tenemos dos personas, animales o cosas, podemos compararlas. En alemán usamos los adjetuvos comparativos para describir las diferencias.

No importa cuán largo sea el adjetivo en alemán, casi siempre le añadimos un: –er al final.

Kleiner es la forma comparativa del adjetivo klein.

schnell (rápido) => schneller (más rápido)
neu (nuevo) => neuer (más nuevo)

Eine Ameise ist kleiner als eine Katze.
Una hormiga es más pequeña que un gato.

Ein Hund ist schneller als eine Schildkröte.
Un perro es más rápido que una tortuga.

Mein Auto ist neuer als dein Auto.
Mi automóvil es más rápido que tu automóvil.

IMPORTANTE

A diferencia de en español, en alemán nunca se usa la palabra mehr (más) para formar un comparativo.

María es más hermosa que Paula.

En alemán decimos:
Maria ist schöner als Paula.

Comparativos y Umlauts

Hay una irregularidad que afecta a los comparativos. A algunos adjetivos, casi siempre de una sola sílaba, se les añade un umlaut (ä, ö o ü). Abajo verás algunos de los ejemplos más comunes:

Cómo aprender con el siguiente ejercicio

  1. Lee y escucha las preguntas y respuestas varias veces.
